Apart from taking these folate-rich foods, you should take folic acid supplement every day from the time you are pregnant till 12 weeks of your pregnancy. Higher dose of folic acid is recommended if you or your partner or your previous child or anyone in your family has a neural tube defect, celiac disease, or diabetes or if you are on an anti-epileptic medication.

Vitamin D Supplement

Your doctor will also advise you to take vitamin D supplement every day. Vitamin D helps in absorbing the levels of calcium and phosphate from food in your body – you need calcium and phosphorus to keep your bones and teeth, and at the same time, it helps your baby to grow strong teeth and bones. You can get Vitamin D mostly by exposing your skin to sunlight, otherwise it is only found in oily fish (such as mackerel, salmon, and sardines), meat, and eggs. You must include these types of foods in your diet after consulting your doctor.

You should intake vitamin C every day during your first trimester throughout your pregnancy. You can get sufficient vitamin C from a balanced diet containing tomatoes, broccoli, bell peppers, citrus fruits, and blackcurrants. It is preferable to take vitamin C supplements which are prescribed by your doctor along with a balanced diet.

Vitamin B12 is essential for the nervous system and the production of RBCs in your baby. Lack of vitamin B12 can lead to serious neural tube defect in your baby, such as spina bifida, anencephaly, or encephalocele. Vitamin B12 is abundant in poultry, meat, eggs, milk, and other fortified foods. Vegans can intake fortified breakfast cereals as vegetarian sources of vitamin B12.
